Is Social Media Marketing right for you?
November 12, 2009
Companies of all sizes and types are embracing social networking outlets like Facebook and Twitter to meet their marketing goals. From branding to promotions, social networking outlets are proving to be successful.
The marketing and branding opportunities on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook are endless. For example, Nike is just starting a new marketing campaign called “The HookUp: Nike + Twitter” that will provide Twitter followers with the “hookup” on Nike Sportswear. Nike also uses Facebook for staying connected with their market in a wide variety of ways, from promoting a new product to news announcements. Why would an established company like Nike use social networking sites? The answer is in demographics.
You might be surprised that the demographics for these social networking outlets are widely diverse. Social networking sites are no longer just for teens and young adults. Of adult internet users, 79% have a Facebook account and the median age for Facebook is now 33, up from 26 in May 2008 . Looking at these demographics, you have to conclude that your users are on social networking sites. Nike understands this. They also know that users are more likely to visit a social site on a daily basis as opposed to going out of their way to visit Nike’s website.
Just as companies need to have a website to stay ahead or keep up with competitors, now companies require social networking profiles as well. Successful marketing requires that you are in the right place at the right time when someone requires your services. Social networking sites provide the best opportunity to keep your company front and center. Users will normally share both their likes and dislikes about a product or service provided by a company on a social site before spreading it via any other means. It requires less effort to post an update on Twitter than it does to call someone. People are using Twitter and Facebook to praise and complain about companies. They’re probably talking about your organization, are you part of these conversations?
If you are not on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, you will never know what people are saying about you. You could be losing out on perfectly timed promotions that are targeted to individuals, and you could be losing even more valuable feedback. The question now isn’t whether or not you should have a social networking profile on sites like Twitter and Facebook. The question now is, “How do you leverage social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to increase your business?”
