  The 411 on Google Analytics a.k.a. GA101
November 12, 2009

While trying to figure out how to explain to everyone all of the cutting edge changes to Google Analytics that were announced at the Google Analytics Authorized Consultants Summit in October 2009, I realized something. Many website owners may not even know what Google Analytics is, or what it can do for your business. So, here goes.

Google Analytics (GA) is a free website traffic reporting program hosted by Google. But rather than looking at the typical old traffic reports showing hits, visits, etc., GA shows you how your visitor find your site, and then what they do after they get there.

Some of the basic features:
• Custom Dashboard – the dashboard comes preset with an overview of your visitors, site usage, traffic sources, content and ecommerce, but can easily be customized to include any data you deem most important for your website. This report can quickly be emailed or scheduled to automatically be emailed to the key decision makers in your company.
• Keyword and Campaign Comparison – track the keywords that draw customers into your site through Google and all other search engines. Then compare your email newsletter, referrals, paid links, and ad campaigns to see which are the most effective, yielding a better return on your investment.
• Ecommerce Tracking – identify your revenue sources by tracking your websites transactions. Transaction can be traced back to specific keywords a customer searched for or a campaign. Also, delve into data showing customer loyalty and latency.
• Internal Site Search Tracking – the best way to discover what a customer really wants from your site is through the keywords they are typing in your internal site search. Find out what they are looking for and then make sure you provide that information.
• AdWords Integration – Google AdWords allows you to create and run pay per click sponsored ads on Google and its advertising network. AdWords integrates seamlessly with Google Analytics. Analytics data on your AdWords campaigns will track how your customer moves through your website and ultimately how your ad converts into a sale. It lets you know which keywords and ads are the most profitable to you.
• Goal Tracking with Funnel Visualization – Goals track a specific path you would like a user to take through a website. Funnel visualization is a great way to show you the visits completing that path, as well as where users enter and exit that path.
• GeoTargeting – learn where your visitor are coming from down to the city level.
• Site Overlay – view each page of your website and identify the traffic and conversion rate for every link on that page
